NYISO & transmission owners constructed a new control center and smart grid installations with a $38 million Recovery Act investment that will result in an estimated $200 million in savings throughout New York annually.
The new construction is designed with the intention to improve the reliability of the power grid and streamline the efficiency of power transmission. More specifically,Barbara Vergetis Lundin in the article highlights: “installing new transmission capacitors to increase the ability of grid operators to regulate transmission voltages, as well as advanced software and tools that help NYISO engineers conduct extensive and detailed system modeling and analysis”.
What makes the latest project from Florida Power & Light and Silver Spring Networks so unique? It is the “single largest public lighting network to be deployed in North America, and notably, the first to ride on the same network used for smart metering”, according to Sterling Hughes, Silver Spring’s senior director of advanced technology.
So what are the benefits of having a lighting system on a smart metering network?

- Maintain reliability goals of System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) of 60 minutes and of System Average Interruption Frequency Index (SAIFI) of 0.8 interruptions
- All of these goals must be achieved while meeting affordability measures of no more than an average 2% rate increase per year and ensuring that the average residential bill is in the bottom 50% of the residential bills in Texas.
